The Slide Fire

And a new day will dawn for those who stand long, And the forests will echo with laughter."
--Stairway to Heaven

West Fork Trail, Sedona, Arizona

It's 4 AM and I can't sleep.

I've been up reading all night about the Slide fire. I'm grateful to the locals and the contacts within the fire department who have been so kind to keep the messages to my phone coming.  I'm immensely moved by this thoughtfulness.

Photo Of The Month

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.”
― Martha Graham

“Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and, therefore, the foundation of all invention and innovation. In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power that enables us to empathize with humans whose experiences we have never shared.”

There is nothing more beautiful than soft light as it makes it's way through the forest canopy to warmly kiss the sandy ground. Smokey and ethereal, delicate and dainty. So many times at some point in this forest, I've been cold and wet and I've had to search for a bit of light to bask in and warm up. There is that moment when the body stops shivering and the affection of the sun takes over and fills you up. How many times I've sat in this state, this fleeting euphoria and wanted nothing else...

By the light of the Southwest moon I wander
motionless light of a starry night.
Atop a cresting hill I ponder

Hold the sand, like I hold the world
precious handfuls at a time
and watch the grains as they fall away
like diamonds as the moonlight shines

By the light of the Southwest moon, I wander.

I think of you

Not So Long Ago

Thank you Arizona Highways Magazine for the image feature on the latest blog post.

I didn't even recognize the image as my own but was really surprised and happy to see it featured. Thanks to Arizona Highways Magazine, whose staff have been incredibly generous and supportive of my work.

It reminded me of a great story that went with the photo. This is one of my VERY first photos with my little Canon Rebel 450D and I only had one lens, a Sigma 17-70mm. To me, my gear was priceless, I'd saved up for a long time to own this gear and I loved my camera dearly.
