LOVE

“The beauty and mystery of this world only emerges through affection, attention, interest and compassion . . . open your eyes wide and actually see this world by attending to its colors, details and irony.” Orhan Pamuk

Color and chaos.

Warm hues and warm sand.
Such a feeling of peace to feel the sun's first rays.

Relief for a cold and tired hiker.
Cold body warming,

standing in  a sea of unimaginable iridescence and color

Just smiling

She Smiles

"She’s talking to angels, counting the stars
Making a wish on a passing car
She’s dancing with strangers, falling apart

Waiting for Superman to pick her up
In his arms, In his arms
Waiting for Superman"

"Waiting For Superman"

The Truth

I'm drawn to the true word and those who consistently live by it.
Human nature dictates that in a storm, seek higher ground.  That same nature
warns of those who create a storm in our hearts, seek a higher mind..
It's a daily challenge to live an authentic life, a life of truths.  I know, I fail often.
Easy to be seduced by the ego to be larger than that life and compete for some unknown
gain. It's a vicious cycle that creates nothing but a weary heart.
There is no profit in it.

The Heart Of All That Matters

"Let the beauty of what you love,
be what you do"
Rumi

Being a painter, I'm influenced by many of the great masters,
namely Monet, Matisse, Van Gogh, John Singer Sargent and their depictions of landscapes.
Monet was obsessed with light, especially how the light at different times would change the subject thus changing the mood.
He would often paint the same subject over and over studying the light.
He did this in his "Haystacks"

On The Road

“The geographical pilgrimage is the symbolic acting out an inner journey.
The inner journey is the interpolation of the meanings
and signs of the outer pilgrimage.
One can have one without the other.
It is best to have both.”
Thomas Merton

“If I am to be fallen into love, I will.
And if as a result, I will appear to be stupid, disillusioned, and of poor judgment, I will.
And I would be damned if I cared what other people think.
For I would rather be thought of as all of these things,
 than not love.
If in loving, I become the naked woman on the horse,
I will ride that horse with my head held high.
This is my spirit.
I am unbreakable.”

Ignite

“They say a good love is one that sits you down, gives you a drink of water, and pats you on top of the head.

But I say a good love is one that casts you into the wind,
sets you ablaze, makes you burn through the skies and ignite the night like a phoenix;
the kind that cuts you loose like a wildfire and you can't stop running simply because you keep on burning everything that you touch!
I say that's a good love; one that burns and flies,
and you run with it!”

Hitchhiker

As I ran from place to place yesterday, I was thinking about how on weekends I often feel I work harder than during the week. Mostly, I'm in a perpetual state of planning my next escape and that's all good, but...

I'd been up early hiking with the dog. Then in search of thermal underclothes, emissions testing, bookstore, oil change and tires checked. Finally, I ended up at the car wash and as I lifted the back of the SUV I saw this.

A little leaf had come home with me from Colorado and it stopped me in my tracks. Such a strange effect this little remnant of another place, another time had.

From just a few weeks ago when all I did was explore and roam and wonder over the autumn colors. Brought me right back to the back roads and coffee houses, the farms, the cold, the cabin, all the while standing in a noisy dirty carwash in the grey city.

I can't explain why it halted me in my tracks but it did. Suddenly, I was awash in sentimentality and left in an melancholic stupor.  Superwoman all day and now aimless. So, I finished the car and decided to STOP with list of "things to do" and just not...do.
Just BE.

I ended up at Harkins theater, bought a ticket for one and watched "Gravity" (I'll never complain about a bad hike again)  Empowering film!  Headed off to my favorite Starbucks patio to relax and watch the city life wind down and dim.

Contemplate the meaning of the little things, the little "signs" like the little leaf.  Which, btw, I left right where I found it.

Sometimes, seemingly in the absence of wind or outside forces, the leaves will shimmer and vibrate
yet it's neighbor may be completely still.
I first noticed this as a child and had since resigned to the belief that the trees were talking. Sentient and aware of my presence is how I'd come to know and love them.
Alone in the forest, yet protected and watched over.
In the warmth of the sun, sit and close your eyes and hear the wind move among them. Isolate the sound of the individual leaves and be lost in their music.
Allow the rest of the world to simply fall away and you are left
 in heaven.

Just Like That

“Anyway, it doesn't matter how much, how often, or how closely you keep an eye on things because you can't control it. Sometimes things and people just go. Just like that.” C. Ahern

An Easter Story

Sunday. Easter morning. Just like any other Sunday if I'm not on the road, I'm either hiking or at the park with my dog friend.

I'm not a religious person, if you define religion as sort of a structured way of thinking about God and such.  I was raised Mormon but then went on to follow my own heart in search of a personal relationship with all things greater than myself.  Still, the holidays bring back memories of my childhood, mother, family and Easters past.

The Quaint Ouray Colorado

During my Fall shooting in Colorado, I stayed in this beautiful little town
